5 Tasks to Get Your Home Ready for Spring
The days are getting longer and there’s a subtle shift in the air. Spring is on its way, but with warmer weather comes the inevitable March mess.
Winter can leave its mark in the form of clutter, salt, and dirt. Here are a few simple tips to help you spruce up your home this spring.
Declutter Your Winter Wares
In your laundry/mudroom, start packing away bulky winter coats, boots, and scarves. If you are limited with storage or closet space, then an organizing bin is a great alternative that can be easily stored. Make space for raincoats, lightweight jackets, sneakers, and sandals. Consider adding hooks or cubbies for each family member’s spring essentials. If you want to keep your shoes off the floor to avoid a mess, invest in a shoe organizer.
Refresh Upholstery
Steam upholstered furniture for a deeper clean and to remove dust mites and allergens. If necessary, wash or replace throw pillow covers and blankets.
Let in Natural Light
Clean blinds and curtains thoroughly with a steamer to get any dust or dirt off. This will improve the air quality. If you have seasonal ones, replace the curtains with lighter, spring-themed ones to allow more natural light to enter your home.
Sump Pump Check-Up
Does your home have a sump pump? Test it to ensure it’s working properly before the spring rains arrive. A functioning sump pump helps prevent basement flooding as the ice and snow thaws.
Test Your Detectors
Spring is the time to replace the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. This is because if you have a home that relies on furnaces or fireplaces during winter may have accumulated dust and debris around the heating system. Testing your smoke detectors in the spring ensures they haven’t been compromised by these winter residuals and will function properly in case of a fire.
